AU Wishbone podcast host and WE BELIEVED co-author sees idea turned into Nissan Heisman House ad

White Rocket Books, publisher of WE BELIEVE: A LIFE OF FOOTBALL AUBURN, VOL. 1, by Van Allen Plexico and John Ringer, is proud to reveal that the new Nissan Heisman House TV commercial featuring Auburn’s Bo Jackson and Aubie the Tiger is inspired by an original idea proposed by Plexico in a tweet.

The television commercial, “Bo Jackson Celebrates Everything,” portrayed Auburn University (AU) grand prize winner and 1985 Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson – as well as the ten-time national mascot champion Aubie – “celebrating while “throwing toilet paper in the trees in the Nissan yard of the Heisman house.

A 45-second version of the ad, which includes part of an interview with Plexico by ESPN personality Christine Williamson, will air during the Ohio game against Louisiana on ESPN on Thursday, September 16 at 8 p.m. Est. It will air again during the Auburn at Penn State game on ABC on Saturday, September 18 at 7:30 p.m. EST.

A shorter version will air in additional spots over the next three weekends. An abridged version of ESPN’s interview with Plexico will air during the college football countdown on ESPN2 on Friday, September 17 at 4:30 p.m. EST. A longer version will be posted on social media in the coming days.

In the spring of 2021, after seeing the tweets on social media, Nissan reached out to Plexico to acquire the rights to the idea to produce a real ad based on it, as part of their 11th season of Nissan Heisman House ads. . Their 2021 ads were all inspired by college football fans across the country.


Nissan says, “We have scoured a decade of Twitter posts referring to ‘Heisman House’ and selected the most creative and humorous of them to serve as the basis for its latest Nissan Heisman House campaign. The result: 10 storylines that would become campaign spots. “

Says Plexico: “I was more than thrilled when Nissan contacted me regarding the idea for the ad. It has always felt natural to me for their campaigns, given Auburn’s Heisman Trophy history and rich footballing lore, including throwing TP into the trees after big wins and milestones. The announcement they produced went beyond my initial suggestions and resulted in a very fun and entertaining place that I think AU fans and college football fans in general will really enjoy.

Plexico, who graduated from Auburn University in 1990, has been hosting the AU Wishbone podcast (with co-host and 1991 AU graduate John Ringer) since 2012, recording new episodes every Monday, throughout the year. year. The podcast mixes humor with a deep appreciation for AU football history. The duo are also the author of three books on Auburn football history.

Plexico and Ringer’s latest book, WE BELIEVE, is an almost 500-page book examining Auburn’s football seasons from 1975 to 1998, game by game and (in some cases) game by game.
