SPRINGDALE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) – The Springdale School District announced Tuesday morning that author Gordon Korman will be heading to OJ Kelly Middle School on Thursday, March 3.
Korman, the author of more than 90 children’s books, will visit the school as part of the district’s annual “Battle of the Books” competition.
During his visit, the press release specifies that he will participate in a “Super Fan Reception” from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. and in an assembly for sixth graders from 1:15 p.m. to 2 p.m. Approximately 60 students will attend the reception and will each receive a free gift. copy of the author’s latest book, “Operation Do-Over”.
He will be signing books and answering questions from students about some of their favorite books by the author.
“Gordon Korman has written 95 books in 30 years, is a frequently featured author at Scholastic book fairs, and has received numerous literary awards,” said JO Kelly Middle School Library Media Specialist Padgett Isaacks. “It really doesn’t get much bigger than that in the world of children’s books.”
She added that Springdale Public Schools has featured the Battle of the Books for about 10 years. The contest is designed to promote reading, inspire writing, and create an understanding of the writing profession, the writing process, and the publishing process.
According to the release, Battle of the Books will continue for Springdale students in March and April with in-school quiz competitions. The winning teams from each of the four colleges in the district will compete to become the champion of the Springdale Middle School Battle of the Books in April or May.
