ComiXology announces new application, deeper integration with Amazon

Digital comics are definitely heating up, and ComiXology is the latest to make big changes. After years of real stability (and complaints about an outdated interface), ComiXology has just announced major updates, all scheduled for the fall.

The news was announced in an email from the CEO David Steinberger, which you can read below.

The good news is that the app will be updated with more robust filtering and navigation, which users have long been asking for, and you will be able to read more free comics if you have a Prime or Kindle Unlimited account.

The bad news is that the existing Comixology site will disappear, to be replaced by the Amazon storefront, that you can see right now. This is a major loss, as flawed as it is, the ComiXology site was designed specifically for comics with previews and credits.

There are many changes that will force users to integrate even more with Amazon, which some may be reluctant to do. You will now need to have an Amazon account to use ComiXology, and all purchases will go through the Amazon store.

This is a very significant change in the way ComiXology does business, and there will certainly be a lot of uproar in 3… 2… 1… but also greater visibility for digital comics on Amazon as a whole. while the category of graphic novels becomes more and more important.

Amazon has acquired many companies over the years, and the way they integrate with Amazon’s main site on browsers varies. For example, Audible is now mainly integrated with Amazon but still has its own brand image and its own interface. Zappos, which sells shoes, still has its own independent website, although all products are also available on Amazon.

ComiXology appears to integrate with Amazon in a much more comprehensive fashion, as “Kindle Comics” on browsers, although the app is still standalone.

And of course, there’s ComiXology’s ongoing original comic book program, like the massive Scott Snyder contract announced just a few weeks ago.

It’s going to be a long day on the interwebs, as a friend just told me.

Here is Steinberger’s letter.

Hello friends!

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m David Steinberger, co-founder and CEO of comiXology. It has been a while since I personally wrote to comiXology clients, but it is for good reason: the comiXology team has been working hard to make some significant changes that you will start to see soon, and today. , I’m excited to share what’s to come.

First of all, I want to ask you to merge your comiXology and Amazon account so that you can use these new services. In fact, once we update this fall, you’ll need to use an Amazon account to use comiXology. You can do it, here. Thank you!

In 2014, comiXology did what all great comic book heroes do – a great team. Teaming up with Amazon was the best way to support our mission: to make everyone on the planet a lifelong fan of comics, graphic novels, or manga. Since then, we’ve added features like Guided View and comiXology Unlimited to Amazon and the Kindle app. We did our amazing comiXology Originals titles available for free reading with a Prime Reading, Kindle Unlimited or comiXology Unlimited subscription. These additions have helped us reach more readers of comics, graphic novels, and manga than ever before.

This fall, we’re launching an improved comiXology app and a new way to buy digital comics and manga on Amazon.com. Here are some of the changes you can expect:

  • Our improved comiXology app will offer flexible filtering and sorting, as well as fun browsing features in the books.
  • A reimagined digital comic book shopping experience on Amazon where you can browse, buy and borrow books to read on the comiXology or Kindle app. You can visit the new shopping experience today as we continue to bring new features online. ComiXology.com will redirect to this new experience when we launch.
  • Faster, more reliable downloads on Android and iOS devices. More read-to-download is new for Android customers. (Yes, we heard you!)
  • Kindle Unlimited and Prime members will be able to borrow from an extensive library of graphic novels and manga on the comiXology app, in select countries.
  • ComiXology purchases will be readable on Kindle apps and devices. Soon you will also be able to read comiXology purchases on the Kindle app, which will give you more flexibility in deciding where and how you read your books.

The team and I look forward to sharing more about our new features and exciting changes over the next two weeks.

If you have any questions that I haven’t covered in this email, visit our FAQ or join our conversation on Twitter.

Thank you for being a reader and an advocate of this incredible art form. I am truly grateful to work with such a passionate team of comic book and manga enthusiasts. I look forward to releasing our new app this fall and continuing with new features and improvements at a faster pace.

For those of you who haven’t yet enjoyed an original comiXology title, read Kel McDonald and Tyler Crook The stone king free of charge until 09/30/2021 as a thank you. I love this book!

All my wishes,

Co-founder and CEO of comiXology
GM Digital Comics, Amazon

PS: I wanted to share something quite amazing: Stephen King’s new novel, Billy Summers, has not one but two mentions of @comixology in the story. It is a pleasant feeling.
