Devin Townsend’s online team has logged in with the following update:
“You may already know that the ongoing pandemic has caused global disruptions in the supply of raw materials such as paper and plastic, and unfortunately this has also affected our production of boxes, vinyls and CDs. Puzzle. This means that we now have to delay the release of The Puzzle and Snuggles by two weeks, so the new release date is October 22 instead of October 8.
The colored vinyl, which was already announced to be available later, is expected to arrive in our warehouses in mid-November. We will do our best to send all product orders ASAP. “

Townsend: âSo what is The Puzzle? … well, it’s not technically my new record, it’s more of a collaborative multimedia art project that serves as a stopgap between Empath and the next record, Lightwork (which will be released in March of the year). next on Inside Out Records). The Puzzle includes two kinds of âsoundtracksâ (the highly orchestrated âPuzzleâ and the very cold âSnugglesâ) as well as a movie, graphic novel, novel and a huge amount of multimedia. It includes many artists (over 50) who participated via Zoom during the pandemic and the experience gave me a chance to purge and be completely free in a creative way. As such, this is a conscious, highly abstract music stream that includes a narrative (in the form of a movie) and is meant to be a documentation of how the pandemic felt to me.
I’m very proud of it and will be uploading a few Snuggles afterwards. Note: this is * not * meant to be considered a regular album, it really is a sprawling, complex, cathartic multimedia version inspired by the events of the past year and a half. Lightwork is much more in line with what I have done in the past (Transcendence, Empath, Addicted, Ocean Machine, etc.) but Puzzle is very close to my heart. It includes so many of my friends and peers, and it has no limits … it’s almost like Puzzle and Snuggle are like a modern day Devlab and Hummer (two of my old albums) but the difference being the complexity levels this project included. Mixing it up alone was a nightmare, not to mention the movie, books, box sets, etc. (the box is a numbered and hand-signed work which is limited to 1000 pieces).
I’m sure this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, and I imagine listeners who are more interested in “Kingdom” or “Deadhead” would be in a better position to wait for Lightwork (and I may very well have that). appreciate …) however, The Puzzle has been my soundtrack for a year and a half, and in keeping with the idea of ââmaking sure what I write is authentic to how I feel, The Puzzle is essentially my documentation on the pandemic and the world around it. It has been a very intense time, as I’m sure you will agree …
The other album, Snuggles, is meant to be something you listen to to make yourself feel better. The puzzle is chaos, Snuggles is calm. The whole project aims to express that I think there is a light at the end of this dark tunnel that we went through. Keeping ourselves and our loved ones together during all of this has become all the point.
Thank you for allowing me to continue doing uncompromising work for a period that may be arguably wiser not to =). “
Devin: “… And here are a few Snuggles. The idea was that when things were darkest and most chaotic last winter, I felt like myself and a lot of people I knew were struggling. to stay in balance, so while Puzzle was meant to purge chaos, Snuggles is meant to be something that plays out during times of trauma or doom.
It was done with the same wonderful group of people who made Puzzle with me.
Thank you again for listening and thank you for not giving up. “
