The Memphians know how good the food is here in our hometown. Now, even more people are doing it, as two Memphis-area originals achieved national recognition this month.
Mississippi’s Most Amazing Ice Cream Flavor
Area 51 ice cream is featured in the July / August issue of Food Network Magazine.
In the “50 states, 50 balls” feature, the popular cable network spinoff magazine named what it considers “the most amazing flavor of every state.”
Area 51’s Cedar Hill Blackberry Goat Cheese Ice Cream was Mississippi’s pick for Food Network Magazine’s American Ice Cream Tour. It’s a flavor that has been on the menu since the first Area 51 opened in 2014.
âI had a list of blackberry flavors that I wanted to make,â said Karin Cubbins, owner and chef of Area 51. âWe made the blackberry goat cheese flavor first. we never made another blackberry flavor. “
Cubbins said she was taken by surprise when Food Network magazine called to break the news.
âIt’s always nice to be recognized locally and to see the response from people coming in,â Cubbins said. “But that’s another thing when you get national attention from people who aren’t here. It’s really a reward for all of our hard work.”
Area 51 Ice Cream is based in Hernando. In January, the store moved to a new, larger space at 100 E. Commerce St. It also has a store in the Crosstown Concourse in Midtown Memphis.
The best Tennessee flavor on the list is Honeycomb from Hattie Jane’s Creamery in Murfreesboro. This unique flavor includes honeycomb candy and cocoa nibs.
Ten Best Donut Stores in the United States
Gibson’s Donuts has been named by Travel Magazine (an online publication) as one of the 10 best donut shops to visit in the United States.
âGibson’s Donuts is a Memphis staple,â the article reads. âThis simple, family-owned donut shop has been around for over 50 years and doesn’t even have a website. To be honest, it doesn’t need one. Everyone knows Gibson for their fresh, affordable donuts. . “
Gibson owner Don DeWeese said he felt honored that Gibson was included on the list.
âWe have been on many lists, but it always makes us smile when we are recognized,â he said.
Travel Magazine touted that “Gibson’s star donut has to be the bacon and maple donut covered with real pieces of bacon.”
